Whole School Citizenship

On Thursday, the whole school carried out 2 activities:

  1. Baking in preparation for our coffee afternoon this afternoon, learning practical life skills. The smells from the middle classroom were mouthwatering.
  2. School Values and planning what Newmore School Values will be. The children were then put into pairs looking at examples of local schools’ values. They had discussions about what they liked and then created their own list for Newmore;

Friendly/Friendship Be kind and respectful
Team Work Respect
Confidence Honest
Fun Be creative
Responsibility  Improve and learn
Caring Be happy and never give up
Work Hard Resilience
To encourage others to be the best that they can be /best self Pride
Trust (yourself and others) Helpful
Rational Encourage
Sharing  Motivated
Never give up Stay positive
It’s ok to be different  Support people who struggle
Include  Be ready to learn
Challenge yourself Keep yourself and others safe
Grateful Be ambitious

Once both groups has created their lists. We met back as a whole school and came up with a plan.

There were 3 suggestions:

  • Pick 8 or 10 and vote for the best via google
  • Condense some as a few are similar
  • Make an acronym so we can remember the values as this helps us with the well-being indicators.

The whole school voted and agreed the best thing would be to have an acronym.

Next steps:

  • As a whole school in mixed pairs, come up with words that could be used as an acronym and then use the values we have listed about to make our acronym.
  • We will then vote on the best which will then become our schools values.

Under the Mask

During Assembly today we were recognising and learning about Mental Health – tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

To learn about how the children could deal with thier emotions – sadnes, anger and worry we read the book ‘Under the Mask.’ This is a special book as it was written by a previous teacher of Newmore Primary, Emma Cahill. Emma is currently teaching in Brazil.

Miss Cahill sent us our own video of her reading the book to us – the children LOVED it!

Ask your child who the characters are and how they help them to recognise how to ‘unlock my ability for ME to control me.’

It is a super book which helps the children to understand and relate to how they might feel at times – ’emotions are vistiors, they come and go!’

Art

art

Today, P1-4 were doing Art with Mrs Blake.

They were using watercolours and crayons to paint and add patterns to an oak leaf template.

This block of work will expose the children to “the elements of art” which include form, tone, pattern and texture with an autumn focus.

Safe Highlanders

safe highlandersOur P7 children attended the Safe Highlanders event which was run by Highlife Highland in Dingwall. The children were taken around various stations to learn about keeping themselves safe in a range of situations. Some of the participants were SSE, Police, Fire Service, Internet Safety, British Rail and various others.

Fire Brigade

Dean, Stuart, Liam and Rowan from Invergordon Retained Fire Brigade came to visit P1-4 today to inform them what they do to help people and explain what they do in their job. The children had not seen some of the equipment or protective clothing they use before so they were very interested in learning and hearing about it!

The children thoroughly enjoyed this visit and asked some super questions.

Road Bridge Partnership

Mrs Rooney joined up with teachers from other Primary Schools in Invergordon to plan a task that would link to the building of the new Jetty down in Invergordon by RoadBridge.

The aim of the lesson was to learn about materials, shapes and properties and use this knowledge to design and construct a model windmill.

Do you think they were successful….?

The children were asked what they learnt:

You phone 999 if there is an emergency and need help. (Caleb)

Beach Clean Week

“Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. It’s also dangerous for people and damaging to our tourism and fishing industries. We all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter” (Marine Conservation Society)

P4-7 were delighted to be involved in this year’s Beach Clean in Invergordon. We were supported by a couple of volunteers from the Port Authority and Roadbridge. The pupils relished the opportunity to take their learning out of the classroom. The school endeavours to give  our pupils as many opportunities as possible to become Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors, Successful Learner and Responsible Citizens.

Today’s work also allowed us to help the pupils:

  • evaluate environmental, scientific and technological issues
  • develop informed, ethical views of complex issues
  • assess risk and take informed decisions
  • achieve success in different areas of activity
  • develop a knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland’s place in it

We are incredibly proud of the attitude and behaviour of the pupils who achieved great results for our environment. Thank you also to the parents who came along to help!
